• For beer league hockey players, the game is about more than winning. Late-night faceoffs, locker room friendships, and a shared love of hockey keep adults returning to the ice year after year.
Imagine arriving for your weekly recreational hockey game and discovering that your new teammate is a Stanley Cup champion.
That's exactly what happened to a group of beer league players in Virginia during the summer of 2025, when former Washington Capitals star Evgeny Kuznetsov joined their games.
Kuznetsov helped Washington win the Stanley Cup in 2018. Now he was sharing the ice with ordinary players who had paid to spend their evening playing hockey.
The appearance made headlines, but it also captured something about beer league hockey: no matter how old you get or how good you once were, there's still something about playing the game that's hard to give up. (The Washington Post, 2025)
